Remember how the global onset of the coronavirus shut down schools and interrupted the educational process for millions of students or how deficits in fundamental areas would be made up once the world opened up again? That didn't really happen.
I had a great conversation with Nancy Weinstein, CEO of Mindprint, about the reality of post pandemic learning loss. Here were our key takeaways:
Post-pandemic learning loss is real, with verbal memory showing the most significant decline, especially in younger students
Contrary to expectations, attention skills slightly improved, while complex reasoning remained largely unchanged
Students now require approximately 12 repetitions (up from 5-7) to retain information effectively
Flexible thinking declined across all age groups--including teachers--potentially contributing to challenges in education
